LATE REPUBLIC ROMAN LEGIONARY

This program and impression is specifically focused on the time of C. Julius Caesar – the impression is to show what a soldier looked like from what little archaeological information that survives, from the end of Caesar’s Gallic Wars into the Great Civil War against Gn, Pompeius Magnus (Pompey the Great). Time period is apx. 50 BCE/BC – 25 BCE/BC.

This presentation can also offer a “first person” like lecture on the torrid situation and events that were occurring between the end of the Republic and into the first Empire of Rome.  Surrounded by near constant Civil War between major political players in Rome, civilian and soldier alike were thrust in between their bitter rivalries and disputes.  Old Rome, where soldiers were hired and paid by the politicians, versus the New Empire, where soldiers became full time professionals, disciplined and trained to a lifetime of warfare and dominance paid through the use of taxes and public infrastructure.

This program can also include a Hands-On section as well as Audience Participation to demonstrate combat tactics.
